Gen Athor is dead



JUBA, 20 December 2011 (NASS) – The leader of the most disturbing rebel group in South Sudan, Lieutenant General George Athor was killed around 1800 hours yesterday by the SPLA border patrol at Morobo County-Central Equatoria State when infiltrating South Sudan from Rwanda.

 
This was announced today by the Vice President of the Republic of South Sudan Hon Dr Riek Machar Teny in a press briefing in his office.


According to the Vice President, the death of renegade General George Athor and one of his soldiers comes as a result of a clash with the SPLA while coming from Rwanda, driving through the eastern borders of Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda to recruit in Central Equatoria state. Dr Machar said the body of the renegade general is on the way to be handed to his family for burial.


While answering questions after the briefing, the Vice President noted that, the death of Athor was not a plan from the government since the government had declared general amnesty to all rebel groups in the bushes of South Sudan.

He appealed to all the followers of General Athor to heed the amnesty and pardon is already declared by the President of Republic, H.E. Gen Salva Kiir Mayardit during the independence celebrations on 9th July 2011.

Dr Machar also reiterated the commitment of the government to the agreement reached between Athor forces and the government of South Sudan on 19th November 2011. He also called on all those who rebelled against the government to lay down their arms and join the process of peace and development in the country.

General George Athor rebelled against the government right after the April 2010 elections over the gubernatorial position of Jonglei state.
